What you NEED to know about Dental Insurance -

Dental Insurance is rapidly playing a larger role in helping people obtain dental treatment.

Since we strongly feel our patients deserve the best possible dental care we can provide, we would like to share some facts about dental insurance with you.

DID YOU KNOW -

It has been the experience of many dentists that many insurance companies tell their customers that “fees are above usual and customary fees,” rather than saying to them “our benefits are too low.” In our office we do not view our patients as “usual and customary,” but as quality people who expect quality dentistry. The insurance company sets the “allowable” or “usual and customary fees” depending on how much your employer has decided to pay for your policy. It’s like car insurance; the fewer benefits you choose, the less you pay in premiums.

DID YOU KNOW -

Your dental insurance is based upon a contract between your employer and an insurance company. When you have any questions regarding your insurance, we ask that you contact your employer or insurance company directly regarding the specifics and details of your plan.  Your insurance company will only disclose generalities to the provider.

DID YOU KNOW -

Many plans tell their insured that they will be covered “up to 80% or 100%.” In spite of what you’re told, by your insurance company regarding  “Usual and Customary fees”, we’ve found most plans actually cover about 60% to 80% of an average fee. Some plans pay more, some less. The amount your plan pays is determined by how much your employer pays for the insurance, the less your employer pays, the smaller amounts of coverage you will receive.

DID YOU KNOW -

Dental Insurance benefits differ greatly from general health insurance benefits. In 1971, dental insurance benefits were approximately $1,000 per year. Some 35 years later, you will note that  benefits are still, 1,000 to $2,000 per year. Figuring a 6% rate of inflation per year, you should be receiving $4,549 per year in dental benefits. Your premiums have increased, but your benefits have not. Therefore, dental insurance is never a “pay-all,” it is only an aid to help assist you in paying for your dental care.
